CINEMAY – Season III, Episode II: Quiet by Arkadi Zaides
Wednesday, April 1st at 7 pm

The second episode of CINEMAY’s third season is dedicated to Arkadi Zaides’ piece Quiet (2010). The work of Arkadi Zaides (*1979, Homel, Belarus) addresses social and political issues, previously focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian context, where he emigrated in the 1990s, and on the situation in Europe, where he studied and currently lives and works. Zaides’s artistic practice aims at initiating critical debate, concentrating on the body as a medium through which social and political issues are experienced most acutely. An independent choreographer since 2004, Zaides performed for several Israeli companies such as Batsheva Dance Company and Yasmeen Godder Dance Group. He obtained his master’s degree in choreography at De Theaterschool, Amsterdam; his performances and installations have been presented at numerous dance and theater festivals, museums and galleries across Europe, North and South America and Asia.

About Quiet (2010)
Quiet arose from a real sense of emergency Zaides felt in light of the growing violence and mistrust between communities in Israel. In response to such an acute environment, he decided to create a platform that allows for open and honest forms of communication – a place where a broad perspective is sought and where trust is continuously built. The creative process was inspired by the differences between the participants: Israeli and Palestinian actors, dancers and artists. Following these premises, the four characters reveal a landscape that contains aggression, compassion, confusion, and yearning. However, as the piece suggests, it is in the midst of this intense environment that a constant search for a quiet place lies

About CINEMAY
CINEMAY is a screening series curated by choreographer May Zarhy (*1984, Tel Aviv; lives and works in Tel Aviv and Frankfurt). In each episode, Zarhy presents documentation of stage works that haven’t been performed in Israel for a while, either because the pieces are no longer presented, cannot be toured, were created by artists who refuse to come to Israel or other. The program presents full-length documentation of these selected dance and performance pieces followed by a video conference with their respective author. While the first season of CINEMAY was presented at Kelim Choreographic Center in Bat Yam, Israel, in 2017, and featured works by Eszter Salamon, Taldans (Mustafa Kaplan and Filiz Sızanlı), Martin Schick, Panaibra Gabriel Canda, and Maria Campos Arroyo, the second season of CINEMAY was presented at the CCA Tel Aviv, and features works by Lucy Guerin, Youness Atbane, Germaine Acogny, Ioannis Mandafounis and Fabrice Mazliah and Noé Soulier.
