Nature of the Carmel Coast: Past, Present, and Future

Discover breathtaking views and fresh breezes as we explore three different ecosystems sustained by the streams that cascade from the Carmel escarpment into the Mediterranean. On the seashore, in rewilded wetlands, or at the top of the Carmel highlands, we'll glimpse how, throughout history, human ingenuity has worked in harmony with nature.

Our Tour Includes:

Nahal Taninim
Our adventure begins at Nahal Taninim, the meandering stream at the bottom of the watershed. Here, archeological sites will let us explore the historical use of the water. We'll learn who used to be here (hint: taninim = crocodiles) and who still calls this area home.

Maagan Michael Fishponds
Kibbutz Maagan Michael is a fascinating showcase of SPNI's Start-Up Nature rewilding project. The restored wetlands are the natural rest stop for millions of birds migrating every year from Europe to Africa and back. From dainty sandpipers to commanding ospreys, we'll get a peek at some of the world's most dazzlingly diverse birdlife.

Falafel Lunch
Next, we'll break for an authentically Israeli lunch at one of the best falafel and hummus spots in the area. This mouthwatering local cuisine is the perfect way to recharge before our final stop at the top of the Carmel watershed.

Ramat HaNadiv
Our last visit for the day is Ramat HaNadiv, the famous gardens opened more than half a century ago in memory of Baron Edmond de Rothschild. This site offers visitors from around the world both elegant formal gardens and majestic untamed wilderness. We'll tie up the loose ends by enjoying the breathtaking views at the escarpment that is the source of the watershed we've traced throughout our journey.
