The Art of Noticing: Connect with nature through words and sketches
17/7/26 + 7/8/26

Slow down, observe closely, and rediscover the natural world through creativity.

Nature journaling is a powerful way to deepen our connection with the outdoors. By taking time to sketch, write, and reflect on the world around us, we begin to notice details we often overlook — the movement of birds, changing light, textures, sounds, and the small stories unfolding in nature every day.

This summer, join us for a special two-part workshop series designed for adults who want to explore nature through art, observation, and creative expression. No previous drawing or writing experience is necessary — only curiosity and a willingness to look more closely.

Part 1 – Introduction to Nature Journaling & Sketching Nature

17/7/26

8:00 -12:00
At the Nili and David Jerusalem Bird Observatory, Jerusalem

with Amir Balaban - naturalist, artist, photographer.

Learn the foundations of nature journaling through observation and simple sketching techniques. Amir will guide participants in how to slow down, notice patterns and behaviors in nature, and confidently capture what they see on paper. The focus is not on creating perfect art, but on developing attention, curiosity, and personal connection to the natural world.

Part 2 – Creative Writing in Nature

7/8/26

8:00 - 11:00
At the Gazelle Valley Park, Jerusalem

with Gwen Ackerman - author, journalist, creative writing teacher.

In the second session, participants will explore ways to translate their experiences in nature into words. Through guided creative writing exercises, Gwen will help participants reflect on place, memory, observation, and emotion, using nature as inspiration for storytelling and personal expression.

Whether you are a birdwatcher, artist, writer, nature lover, or simply looking for a creative and meaningful outdoor experience, this workshop series offers an opportunity to connect more deeply with both nature and yourself.

No prior experience in drawing or writing is required. All materials and guidance will be provided.

Price: 400 nis, 360 for members of SPNI

The Society for the Protection of Nature reserves the right to cancel/change the activity depending on weather conditions, security, safety and at its sole discretion.

More details on meeting point and contact information for guide will be sent on registration.
